Background and Summary

This recipe was previously submitted to the TRC in issue #51 but has since gone through a number of extensive re-writes to take on board the comments from the TRC. The main concern previously was the complexity of the use case and to solve this, the use case has been changed to geo-rectifying a map from a 1987 Library of Congress leaflet. The Geo annotation in the recipe is targeted at a region of the canvas and is related to the geographical coordinators for a rectangle. The recipe includes a couple of screenshots to try and make the use case clearer and show what a future IIIF viewer would do with this type of annotation.

The use case for geo-rectifying IIIF maps is a strong one that has been discussed in the maps community group and was identified early. The Maps TSG are working on a navPlace extension which could be used to geo-rectify a full canvas but the annotation in this recipe would still be the only way to geo-rectify a portion of the canvas.

If approved this recipe will both support the discussions on navPlace but also help the longer term discussions on more complicated IIIF maps use cases.

Voting and changes

We welcome comments on the recipe and as well as voting +1, confused face or -1 feel free to add comments to this issue. If this issue is approved then the author will take account of the comments before we merge the branch in to the master cookbook branch.

If the recipe is rejected by the TRC then we will make the changes requested and resubmit it to a future TRC meeting. If you feel that your comments are substantial enough that the recipe should be looked at again by the TRC after the changes have been made please vote -1 (thumbs down).

Changes to the recipe will only be made after the TRC voting process has concluded.

As stated during the TRC call, this recipe will not work with Presentation API 2.1. Suggestion is to clearly mention in https://iiif.io/api/cookbook/ that all cookbook recipes are designed for the Presentation API 3.0 rather than having a backward compatibility notes for all recipes that "wouldn't work" with previous versions.

Notes from the TRC call:

"Recommendation to add to style guide how to do lightbox (narrative and code snippet)"

Also the comment above from Julien.
