Hi All!

It’s exciting to start our 2024 NASA Openscapes Champions Cohort and meet you all in Zoom! We were grateful to Aronne Merrelli for sharing his experiences of First Forays into the Cloud, and how it’s possible to go from Cloud novice to feeling like it’s a super power and doing real analyses for his AGU poster (and beyond!). We introduced a lot of concepts and terms; we will explore them more together in the next sessions, as well as more about how and when to Cloud. Below is a light digest of Call 01, and a reminder of tasks before next time.

Have a good week,

The NASA Openscapes team

Digest: Cohort Call 01 [ 2024-nasa-champions ]

Openscapes_CohortCalls [ 2024-nasa-champions ] Google folder - contains agendas, recordings, pathways

https://openscapes.github.io/2024-nasa-champions - cohort webpage

Goals: We started working towards a common understanding of the Openscapes mindset and what your pathway forward looks like for your team.

Task: please see the Agenda doc (under Closing) for more details

  1. Have a Seaside Chat & start your Pathway

  2. Prepare for our NASA Earthdata Cloud Clinic in Call 2, April 17

    1. Add your GitHub username to the spreadsheet Openscapes Participants and we will add you to the 2i2c JupyterHub. You’ll receive a confirmation email on Tuesday before Call 02. If you don't have a GitHub account yet that is ok: create one at https://github.com.

    2. Know your Earthdata Login - this is free and required for accessing NASA data. If you don't have a Earthdata Login account yet that is ok: create one at https://urs.earthdata.nasa.gov/

  3. Slack - We'll send each of you an invitation to Openscapes Slack. Here’s a short Slack orientation to help you get comfortable. The 2024-nasa-champions channel is a private space to connect with each other, and other community channels are to engage with folks from previous cohorts and the broader Openscapes Community. Joining Slack is optional, another tool for you to experiment with.

Slide Decks:

  • Openscapes mindset (slides)

  • Better science for future us - Aronne Merrelli (slides)

A few lines from shared notes in the Agenda doc

  •  That 10c/TB “rule” by Matt Rocklin is so interesting! I’m glad that we are starting to establish some sort of shared baseline for cost comparisons +1 💯 +1

  • I am going to pass on the phrase “Feels like a super power” to the DAAC manager. +1

  • The costs seem really quite trivial to do this type of work and makes me excited to think about the potential for this in some of the work I have done processing lots of remote sensing data. Also makes me sad to think about the time wasted in previous efforts

  • I find it hard to think about projects that would be good for the cloud when I have no experience using the cloud so how can you find a project to move to the cloud when your brain won’t let you go there in the first place? 💯

  • Excited for the upcoming tutorials/would love to see an example notebook on parallelizing this task +1+1

    • Mahsa Jami will show an example in a future call
  • ‎Download and analyze -> data reduction, transformation, analysis in-place.

  • Unifying disparate tools offered by DAACs

  • Data collections uniquely identified in 3 separate ways (you only need 1)

    • DOI, e.g.: “10.5067/GPM/IMERGDF/DAY/07”

    • Shortname (+ version), e.g.: “GPM_3IMERGDF” (also needed: which version?)

    • ConceptID, e.g.: “C2723754864-GES_DISC”
