index.html

디렉토리의 대표 문서로서, 브라우저에서 어떤 디렉토리에 접속 했을 때 자동적으로 보여주는 파일
디렉토리에 index 파일이 없는 경우 그 디렉토리에 있는 파일들을 리스트 형식으로 보여주거나 또는 forbidden 메세지가 뜨면서 접근 금지된다.

개인 컴퓨터에서 www.naver.com이라는 웹사이트의 서버에 루르 디렉터리에 있는 index.html 파일을 HTTP로 요청한다. 이에 서버는 해당 파일을 찾아서 HTTP로 응답하고 없으면 에러를 보여준다

즉, http://www.도메인은 http://www.도메인/index.html과 같은 주소이다.
