Describe your suggestion

Harvard Business Review defines imposter syndrome as “a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist despite evident success.” It is especially prevalent in programming, where it’s easy to compare yourself to others, and the learning curve is steep for beginners. Developers regularly experience these feelings even when they’ve contributed meaningfully to projects and have work to back their experience. Imposter syndrome is a recurring topic across all major programming communities, such as Reddit, StackOverflow, blogs, and programs. For instance, searching “imposter syndrome” in the Python Discord server yields over 500 results, and searching it in r/learnprogramming yields thousands more.

I would like to suggest:

  • A standalone section in The Odin Project’s “Motivation and Mindset” Foundations Course that explains imposter syndrome, normalizes the experience and introduces some coping strategies.
  • A link to some resources under “Additional resources”

Some resources that could be pointed to are:

  • "What we talk about when we talk about impostor syndrome" on Stack Overflow Blog for programmers specifically
  • "Is Impostor Syndrome Holding You Back From Living Your Best Life?" on Verywell Mind for a broader perspective

A helpful, gentle reminder could also be included at the end of each course(s); however, it may be most beneficial to place it in Motivation and Mindset and introduce the concept to someone getting started in learning programming off the bat.
