mkdir cdk-sam-example
cd cdk-sam-example
cdk init app --language java

add the lambda dependency to the pom.xml

    <dependencies>
    ...
        <dependency>
            <groupId>software.amazon.awscdk</groupId>
            <artifactId>lambda</artifactId>
            <version>${cdk.version}</version>
        </dependency>
    ...
    </dependencies>

Use SAM to create an Lambda function (Image packaging & Java 11)

$ sam init

        1 - AWS Quick Start Templates
        2 - Custom Template Location

        1 - Zip (artifact is a zip uploaded to S3)

                .build());

Deploy to AWS

cdk deploy
