Persist item render for edit forms

Hi Team,

I'm sure i am doing something wrong here. I have Tom-Select on a select input with a custom render for the options and item. It works great on a new form but when i go to edit that record im getting 'undefined' for the 2 pieces of data im trying to show (avatar and name). Is there a way to match the input value with the options list and return the item where the form/input value is persisted?

I think the answer has something to do with 'items:' OR/AND a custom data attribute AND/OR the initialize method, but im at a loss on what to do
