Making my own website theme for mystmd, where do I start?

I've taken a look at https://github.com/executablebooks/myst-theme which shows how to add a new theme in React.

Is there any way to make my own theme similar to other static renderers using a templating engine (e.g., Jekyll with Jinja)

Where do I start?
