Having a Gravatar integration allows users to change their avatar on many sites at once. It also auto-generates unique avatars when a user doesn't provide one (a.k.a. identicons), which you've probably seen here on GitHub. API docs
Some UI suggestions:
(From StackOverflow) A dropdown to choose between uploading an image, pulling from Gravatar, and pulling from OAuth:
(From the Terraria Forums) A field to override which email address to use for the Gravatar lookup (very helpful for the few of us who use a separate address for every service):
