Cleaning up Python 2 Dependent code

Hello,

Would it make sense to remove the Python 2 dependent code paths?
I would like to modernize the library a bit and possibly remove any version-dependent code.

Would it make sense to create PR here for that purpose?

I know that this repo is mostly in maintenance mode.
It would start getting difficult to fix parts of the source code when additional changes are introduced in newer Python releases.
