Here is a screenshot from @Dassadar app written in Shoes. It is an app to manage armies on The 9th Age, relatively similar to @dredknight app for another game. I don't know yet how to use this app but will look around and post more screenshots if necessary. Then we can pick up something for the Facebook page.

It's a very good showcase of using Shoes elements.

Thread Hijack alert!
It's been four months since Shoes 3.3.3 and I want to get a Shoes 3.3.4 out there because there actual bug fixes and new things added. I'm going to close some issues and reclassify others (aka 'do later'). It is also a convenient time for me to do something on the Facebook site (thanks @dredknight )

I see that the site is https://www.facebook.com/rubyshoes3. Can we change that? Start over with a different name? I don't want it to appear that Shoes 4 folks aren't part of Shoes community. There's more of them than us, you know? Maybe. Perhaps a name like www.facebook.com/CodeWithShoes ?

Gotta like what David and Jordan have done with Shoes. It does need promotion. The admin page at facebook is confusing, a challenge I should probably not think about.

RE: rubyshoes3

I feel the same way but CodeWithShoes ain't any better. Perhaps just RubyShoes? To change the URL, one needs to go in about section and modify the username.

Absolutely. It will hopefully inspire others to give Shoes a try.

Perhaps just RubyShoes?

That name is taken. Invent something else.

Hi,
Something strange with your screenshot: some names like "Armies" or "Sirens" are cut whereas they display normally for me...

Perhaps just RubyShoes?

This was my initial idea but it is indeed used.
What do you think about the following available ones ? I like the one in bold:

  • ShoesGui
  • GuiwithShoes
  • ShoesForRuby
  • ShoesGemforRuby
  • Shoezzzzzz
  • Shhooeess
  • ShoesRubyGem
  • ShoesApps

Is shoesrb taken? It might be ok considering the domain name is shoesrb.com

RE: @Dassadar

It's running on FreeBSD with a dark theme. The theme might position things slightly differently. I had to resize up to make some of the things fit properly.

Not available :( but the following work - shoesrby, shoesrbb, shoesrrb

@dredknight @ccoupe what do you think about TeamShoes ? Looking for ideas on Wikipedia, I came across the following... developers... Team Shoes!

Sounds great :)! But unfortunately it is taken :(. ShoesTeam is free though it does not sounds that well.

We are having a tough crowd here. It seems ShoesToolkit and ShoesUI are available. They are not bad but not as good as others we had hoped for. There would be TinyGraphicsToolkit available that I particularly like at this point because it is iconic to the original Shoes manual but no Shoes in the title and a bit long. What do you think?

@dredknight

Sounds good. I do not think there is any better than this one that is available. doh..

I've updated the shoesrb.com site to mention the Facebook group (contribute section). How do people become a member of the group? Do we have to invite them? I can't send a message to the mailing list until I can tell them what they need to do.

IanTrudel commented Nov 3, 2017

People can join by clicking Like but we can invite people as well. No worries here, normal Facebook users know what to do.

You might also suggest at least one Shoes4 team member joins as an admin. We should do our best to keep the community united, both Shoes3 and Shoes4 together.

@Dassadar could you provide me with screenshots of your app and say a few words what it is about (i.e. "Manual for Supermario". If anyone knows some good looking user Shoes examples, please let me know :)

@Dassadar this is good but where can I get it ? :D

@ccoupe @backorder when you like Shoes posts make sure you do it with the personal account and not the Shoes page. It look weird someone to interacts with his own post. You can do it by changing the owner of the action for the post from the bottom right corner of the item.

Here is a screenshot of how the option looks.

We should have weekly activity on Shoes Facebook page. Regular activity increases the chances to increase followers. Any idea?

Yes, I will start posting the last 2 updates from Shoes blog. Another thing we can post is lessons from the Wiki.

@IanTrudel

Excellent. You don't need to post everything at once. One at a time is fine.

Would you consider make videos from the lessons?

@dredknight

Sounds great but I am not sure if I have the time and knowledge. I have never done video stuff. The next few weeks I will be traveling and handling some RL things so not much time to focus.

I got an idea! For FB we can make posts on enhancements that will hit the next release + tutorials for them.

@backorder thanks! ^_^

Sometimes it may feel a little empty but from my experience facebook posting is much like talking in real life - If you do it too much you will probably start sharing irrelevant information which will start annoy the audience. If you do it rarely people will actually be interested what is going on because they have not heard of you recently and when the message is properly delivered it will become a habit for the viewer/reader that what you say is meaningful.

I would definitely watch a Shoes screencast

One of the problems with Ruby screencasts is that they are almost all 3+ years old. That may be OK (ruby probably does not have the velocity that other newer languages do) but it's good to be able to point at something and say "Yes, but there are still new content being produced all the time."

I would even help produce screencasts (I've done screencasts for work before using OBS) I would just need some help with determining what content goes in them, and probably would help if I could get someone else to do the narration, as I don't really like to hear the sound of my own voice 🗡

@IanTrudel
Copy link
Collaborator

@kingdonb it would be awesome. Now I was working on a macOS lookalike dock for a tutorial but don't have much time for programming lately. Perhaps @dredknight could work on something like that and I would assist. Then we script a video that you would record. I can do voice over using Audacity/Ardour. How's that sound to you guys?

dredknight commented Nov 16, 2017

@backorder @kingdonb I think the best way to advertise Shoes is showing step by step concrete examples of what shoes can do. This way people can relate what they can use Shoes for. Recalling my first experience with Shoes the biggest put off was the inability to actually build something or getting it work even though Shoes had all the necessary tools.

Because Shoes is very abstract it is very likely for someone to miss default application of Shoes tools.

For the first casts we can use some of the integrated shoes samples. Starting from more simpler (Animations, Shapes, Static and dynamic paragraphs, simple multi page app etc...) to more complicated ones (the game for colour blinded people :) ). I will select a couple and make a brief guide so we can begin with something.

@IanTrudel
Copy link
Collaborator

@dredknight your feedback is very valuable but the solution might miss the mark.

Let me explain...

Shoes manual is already covering the basics. There are plenty of samples to play around. So why would we make videos about that? We are talking about videos that will involve 3 busy people. Also, we are living in an increasingly superficial world and we might make it with the cool and creative stuff such as an macOS dock, wheel stuff, etc.

Now, where does your feedback come along? We could have one introduction video, a kind of tour guide of Shoes, introducing its features, development workflow, debugging, etc. Our cool and creative videos should probably be targeting somewhat intermediary users but we should always keep the steps in (no major editing cuts) where people can see what we are doing and how we are doing it.

Does it make sense to you?

True I go too techy on the subject and this is already presented here. I get your point. So we have to cover some of this

including some elements specifics (basics).

In private email @backorder convinced me to improve the PR. I just posted this intro on RubyFlow:

Do you remember Shoes? It is a simple cross platform GUI for Ruby created by the mythical _why_the_lucky_stiff. Did you know it is still maintained? Shoes 3.3.4 runs on Windows, OSX, and Linux plus a few more variations like Raspberry Pi and FreeBSD. There are new widgets and features among the bug fixes. There is also a jRuby reimplementation of the original Shoes. Start your exploration here and join the community on Facebook and Github.

We'll see if the accept it.
