It is used to improve reliability on Windows. Not sure if Node.js has improved that: https://github.com/isaacs/node-graceful-fs#improvements-over-fs-module

I think atomically would also replace the need for this package, as it has its own stubborn-fs dependency.

On second thought, stubborn-fs is not nearly as tested as graceful-fs so it's not worth replacing it (also because graceful-fs has zero dependencies as well. Hopefully Voldemort doesn't get to it)
