I'm trying to add an extra cheat for one MS game and I thought the hmod files were just tar.gz files renamed to hmod. But, after extracting, editing, compressing and renaming back to hmod, the retroarch menu no longer sees the cheat file to load.
Any help would be really appreciated!

I found it's much easier to just edit the files through a file manager rather than try and extract them. I'd suggest using 7zip's file manager (or a file manager through your archive program of choice) to navigate to what you want to edit and make whatever changes you like. Just be sure to keep the total number of cheats in mind with the number up top and update the files when it prompts you to (usually upon closing the file you're editing).
Also if there are any games you don't feel that you'll play in the .hmod file you can re-purpose them into a new game of your choice through this method. Just be sure to rename the cheat file itself when you finish up though.
