This is a known issue, I call them "elbows". We've done some experimentation with this in tldraw.com and will likely port those fixes here once mature.

We've made some progress in the forked version that we use in tldraw. I've been meaning to reintroduce those changes here, though there licensing makes that difficult now. I'd expect to come back to the problem eventually and solve it properly.
