There may be legal issues with hosting the current Times New Roman font on the server, since they are licensed for use on Windows machines. There was a "TrueType core fonts for the Web" program that Microsoft provided, that was discontinued in 2002, the EULA can be found here. The older version from 2002 can be distributed and still be found, but this would be something that we would need to sideload, as it isn't found in any official repositories that we can install on the servers.

I suppose I could do a sample with the open font and see if that causes problems when they try to edit the document.

Sean, libappstest already has a font family installed called Nimbus Roman that is just like Times New Roman.
You may want to deploy a test branch with your PDF view set to use "Nimbus Roman" and see if that works.
