w3id namespace #13

product is not even registered at w3id.org. Is product the namespace we will use? Then I think we should register it. Also at prefix.cc. |
I agree. To be done. |
Is this ontology still actively being developed? I couldn't find very much talk about it recently on the mailing list. |
Hi,
No, it is not actively maintained any more, in the sense that the LBD Community Group shifted focus towards a more general "product and property evaluation" ontology (cfr. charter: https://w3c-lbd-cg.github.io/lbd/charter/), which does not really go into detail in the diverse product classes and property names that may exist (e.g. walls, beams, fireResistance, ...). Such detailed taxonomies are very diverse and are therefore meant to be supported by individual product classification and standardisation initiatives (e.g. buildingSMART, CUNECO, OmniClass, UniClass, ASHRAE, local company classifications, etc.). So, you may want to look into the output and work of those organisations. For buildingSMART, reference product ontologies are --temporarily-- available in https://pi.pauwel.be/voc/buildingelement/ (regular building elements) and https://pi.pauwel.be/voc/distributionelement/<https://pi.pauwel.be/voc/buildingelement/> (MEP elements) - based on IFC4. Properties are not available as such, but it should not be that much work to also make those available. It is likely best to close and delete the PRODUCT and PROPS branches in this Git account.
The main message put forward by the W3C LBD CG -- I think -- is that products can be described as individual taxonomies, under the schema.org/product class. But they should be made and published by their owners (not W3C). Properties can be defined, linked to those classes, with a main distinction in property descriptions according to Level 1 and Level 2 (and Level 3) -- Level 3 being the most complex way of representing properties.
kind regards,
Pieter
