In the attached VCD ports 1B and 1C are MDIO and MDC, using normal two-port SMI, and port 4A is MDIO/MDC combined using the two-port SMI code.
Clock cycles get squashed and data is not read properly.
The fix appears to be:
xsim_trace_test_smi_smi.vcd.zip
