Migrating back and forth between ConBee II (ConBee 2) and ConBee III (ConBee 3) using zigpy backup and restore?

Is it possible to migrate back and forth between ConBee II (ConBee 2) and ConBee III (ConBee 3) using zigpy for backup and restore?

Note that before migration you will always need to upgrade the firmware on your old ConBee/RaspBee adapter before doing a backup! (That is however not needed if backing up an old Silicon Labs or Texas Instruments based Zigbee Coordinator).

PS: I do not own a ConBee II (ConBee 2) and ConBee III (ConBee 3) myself so just asking as a discussion about using zigpy-cli for migrations as Zigbee2MQTT users are currently using it as a stand-alone command-line tool for migration between deconz adapter (ConBee/RaspBee) and ezsp adapter because backups for those are not yet supported in the zigbee-herdsman library that Z2M depends on. I use Zigbee2MQTT in Home Assistant with a Conbee 2 stick and looked for a way to migrate to my new Conbee 3 stick.
Thanks to this question here I tried the migration with zigpy and it worked flawlessly!
I did this through the backup (Conbee 2) and restore (Conbee 3) via zigpy cli on a separate Linux machine.
After plugging the Conbee 3 into the machine running Home Assistant, I just changed the device port from /dev/ttyACM0 to /dev/ttyUSB0 and the baudrate to 115200 in the Zigbee2MQTT Addon and all devices were still paired and useable like before.

Note! If plan on migrating to a new adapter then best practice is to upgrade firmware on new adapter before migrating.

You of course also need to change both the serial port as well as the baud rate speed in Zigbee2MQTT configuration file.

I believe ConBee II uses 57600 baudrate + hardware flow control and the new ConBee III uses 115200 baudrate and no flow control.

Can you tell us more info about the migration steps.
You make a backup for the tubeszb addon. and restore in the conbee3. You make any change in this file? or simply restore in the conbee3?

I tryed yesterday but not works because i think make some mistakes. I use a backup of conbee3 and change the parameters like key, tc_address, iee, panid, and others but keeps information about coordinator that type, model, name, version. maybe this was my error.

But here is a short summery:

The only prerequisite is that you have first upgrade to the latest available firmware on the ConBee II / RaspBee II before can backup, (so begin to check the firmware version on ConBee II / RaspBee II is version 26720700 or newer as that makes it possible to backup the NWK security counter). Also note that you can not migrate from the original ConBee as it does not support the same firmware where full backup was possible (as not possible to backup and restore so that NWK security counter is transferred correctly).

It is not recommend to change anything in backup file before restoring, but regardless, you need to be aware of limitations and caveats;

If you do not want to manually re-pair all your devices then you can not change anything, but then you need to understand that you will not be able to reuse your old ConBee II as a Zigbee Coordinator in another Zigbee network that is in close proximity, as you can not have two Zigbee Coordinators with the same IEEE or PAN ID as they likley conflict with each other, (you should however be able to reuse a ConBee II as an OpenThread dongle -> https://github.com/dresden-elektronik/openthread-r21 or alternativly give it away to someone who will use it a long way away so the signals will not reach).

It is only if you do not mind re-pairing all your devices that you should (at least in theory) be able to change ieee, network key, Zigbee channel, or panid, but understand that if you do change anything then your existing devices will not be able to simply re-join the network so you will need to manually re-pair them all. Also note that if you do want to change the ieee then it is not enough to change it in the backup file, as you will also first need to write that new IEEE address to the firmware of the Zigbee Coordinator (which I have no clue if you can even do on a ConBee/RaspBee yourself, as personally I only done so on a Texas Isntruments CC2652 based adapter using cc2538-bsl.py).

After you restore from backup to a new Zigbee Coordinator radio adapter then you need to configure the correct configuration settings for baud rate speed, flow control, and device path that match what ever the new firmware and hardware is using (and can will be different for each so you will need to figure it out).

My problem is that im modifing the file, big error.
I make a backup, and restore this backup directly in the conbee3.
After this, I modified the zigbee2mqtt config file with the new baudrate, and new port. and not work. :-(

but my problem is that i used the port:
/dev/ttyUSB0

and this not works in my case.
I changed it and use the complet "port route":
port: /dev/serial/by-id/usb-dresden_elektronik_ConBee_III.......................

and this works!!!!

Hello everyone,
I tried following the instructions and I hit a wall and I am not sure how to proceed. Maybe someone here can help me out.

The backup seems to work. I get one or two warnings about unknown devices but that's it.
I followed the post above with the suggested settings.
The problem starts when I try to restore my file to the conbee 3.

I change my settings, including the baudarate, and start the zigpy-cli addon.
There seem to be a lot of errors coming up, as I can only copy-paste parts of it since the rest is not visible anymore:

Does anyone know what the problem could be?
I rebooted my computer when changing the USB stick to make sure it is recognized properly.

I posted as a reply in another issue, but wanted to try this here one more time.

FYI, note that someone else posted about some various ConBee II to ConBee II migration issues related to Zigbee2MQTT, including problems caused by him modifying the backup file before restoring it (which is a bad idea unless you know exactly what you are doing and the consequences of doing so)

He also wrote that he got device path issue after the migration but that he got the new config working and changing baud rate and after he changed to using the registered /dev/serial/by-id/ as device path instead of /dev/ttyUSBX (as the general way to find a device specific USB serial port under Linuxis to run ls /dev/serial/by-id/* from an ssh terminal on the host machine which should produce output similar to: /dev/serial/by-id/usb-dresden_elektronik_ConBee_III.......................).

Also note that if Zigbee2MQTT is used in a Docker container then you might need to install and configure Docker-Compose, see example here (that probably needs to be adapted) -> https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/zha#docker-compose

You seem to be running it with tube0013's addon. Maybe there's a way to enable debug logging there. If not, you can install it on any platform and run the commands directly: https://github.com/zigpy/zigpy-cli?tab=readme-ov-file#installation

PS: FYI, this zigpy command line tool was acutally not made for use with Zigbee2MQTT but for the ZHA integration in Home Assistant (which is why zigpy was originally made), however, zigpy-cli can be used as an external stand-alone third-party tool for Zigbee network backup and restore. Thanks for the reply. The post here was made a lot earlier and when there was no reaction, I wasn't sure if it even works, if I use existing posts. That's why I created the separate post.
Unfortunately I did not modify the file and I always use the device specific paths, copied directly from the homeassistant hardware section.

I am not too familiar with the "docker" stuff. I use a mini computer that runs HA OS and that's it. When using the zigpy-cli tool, I ran it in the ssh & web Terminal add on of homeassistant using the non secure mode.

I will follow the links that you posted and see if anyone else faces the same issues :)

I think that your problem isn't actually a problem so you can safely ignore the delivery error tracebacks. Nothing about the errors is consequential and they can show up if you have a very busy network.

I do have quite a few devices in there. Thanks for your feedback. If everything looks good from that "restore end" I will try to figure out why z2mqtt is not working then. Depending on the situation, z2mqtt can be very bitchy.

Hoping someone can help me out here, I've researched the procedure and it looks straight forward. I'm running Hassio on a pi4 with z2m addon and also installed zigpy-cli tools by TubesZB.

I've just bought a conbee3 to replace my conbee2 and have performed an update on the conbee2 to 0x26780700 and update on the conbee3 to 0x26450900, both latest versions from here.

Afterward with both sticks plugged, I ran a backup of the json config from conbee2 as well as conbee3. I then ran a restore of the same filename from conbee2 to the conbee3 and get the following error:

If i run a compare between the two json files, is there a way to modify the config files to make this work on the conbee3 config that i backed up by moving some parameters over? I suspect I would only really need to align the network_key parameter?

Unfortunately I'm kinda stuck from here, any advice appreciated.

Unfortunately I could not grab the full log as I had to capture it as it was happening due to not being able to scroll upward after full log appeared. @tube0013 is the verbose logging a limited number of lines? Is there somewhere else I can grab the full logs in CLI? I couldn't find anything so far.

OK this is interesting, I went ahead and continued with attempting to use the dongle anyway (I hadn't tried this earlier) and it appears to be working oddly. Will monitor for now!
