Our idea for ICCBC 2019 is to create a Augmented Reality App for interactively learning and exploring Chinese characters.
The contest description states
The contest uses an open proposition. The theme of your entry should be a general brain-inspired intelligent system. It can be innovative, a market-oriented application, or advanced research breakthrough, including but not limited to: robots, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), intelligent wearable devices, natural language processing systems, human–computer interaction systems, smartphone apps, algorithms, and software. New ideas, innovative algorithms, and novel applications are highly encouraged. Your entry should reflect versatility, practical value, and application potential.
Our entry will be a novel application in form of a smartphone app in the education category.
Chinese characters are an essential part of the Chinese language and culture. For second-language learners, they are an integral part of becoming proficient in Mandarin. Learning the most common 2000-3000 characters is an arduous task that requires many hours of study. Therefore, we aim at making study Hanzi more interesting and engaging to help students of Chinese to master the Hanzi.
For native speakers, learning more about the history and etymology is also an interesting adventure. Finally, with more smartphone usage, character writing is in decline. Bringing a fun Hanzi experience to smartphones also helps them to not forget.
We will implement a augmented reality smartphone app for interacting with Chinese characters. When pointing the camera of the smartphone to a single character, we will show its 3D representation above it. The decomposition parts are colored differently. THe characters' and its parts' meanings can be queried by clicking on them.
- Android only app
- Only most common characters (2000 - 3000)?
- Scanning single character only at first
