Substrate
A substrate is a material used to fill plant containers. Most containers must be filled with a substrate before anything can be planted in this.
In Modular Flower Pots (the mod that preceded Garden Stuff), several plants were restricted by to specific substrates. This rule is not currently enforced, except in the case of water.

- Soul Sand
- Water
Dirt and garden soil can both be tilled with a compatible hoe tool after being placed in a container, producing farmland and tilled garden soil respectively.
